The Hansens Disease Project was one of the first projects of the Samten Tse Charitable Society (STCS). For many years STCS has sponsored a colony of people suffering from leprosy and the social consequences of living as outcastes, with begging being the only means of income.
Food, medical aid, monthly stipend, construction of cleaner houses and environment and support given to the many living in this colony has brought enormous changes. Today, they live in a better environment which is protected and are learning to be self reliant.
Walls surrounding the entire colony have been built to keep the area safe and clean. Better sanitation facilities to improve health and hygiene, better housing facilities and food are provided. With help from the Government and many people they have also built a few additional rooms on the outskirts of the colony. These few rooms have been put on rent to bring in income that is divided equally among the members of the colony.
